- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh chives
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice, sit for 5 min)
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Stir in cheddar cheese, parsley, chives, and thyme until evenly distributed.
- In a small bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg together.
- Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until a soft, sticky dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead 4–5 times. Shape into a round loaf.
- Place on the prepared baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to cut a deep “X” across the top.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the crust is golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool slightly on a wire rack and serve warm.
Notes
- If you don’t have buttermilk, use 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice and let sit 5 minutes.
- Best served warm straight from the oven.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and reheated.
