Description
AMISH WHITE BREAD: Soft, fluffy, and lightly sweet, this homemade Amish white bread comes together quickly with a few pantry staples—perfect for sandwiches, toast, or slathering with butter.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast (2 packets)
- 1/4 cup neutral oil or melted unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 5 1/2 to 6 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle in yeast and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in oil and salt. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
- Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 6–8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled.
- Punch down dough and divide into two equal portions. Shape into loaves and place in greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
- Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes, until loaves rise about 1 inch above the rim of the pans.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until golden and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.
- Brush tops with butter while warm (optional) for a soft, shiny crust. Cool before slicing.
Notes
- Store cooled loaves at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days; freeze for longer storage.
- For a soft crust, brush with melted butter immediately after baking (optional).
- Two loaves are produced; wrap and freeze one loaf if desired for longer storage.
- No starter is required for this recipe—the dough is leavened with active dry yeast.
