Description

AMISH WHITE BREAD: Soft, fluffy, and lightly sweet, this homemade Amish white bread comes together quickly with a few pantry staples—perfect for sandwiches, toast, or slathering with butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast (2 packets)
  • 1/4 cup neutral oil or melted unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 5 1/2 to 6 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle in yeast and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in oil and salt. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 6–8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled.
  5. Punch down dough and divide into two equal portions. Shape into loaves and place in greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
  6. Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes, until loaves rise about 1 inch above the rim of the pans.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until golden and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.
  8. Brush tops with butter while warm (optional) for a soft, shiny crust. Cool before slicing.

Notes

  • Store cooled loaves at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days; freeze for longer storage.
  • For a soft crust, brush with melted butter immediately after baking (optional).
  • Two loaves are produced; wrap and freeze one loaf if desired for longer storage.
  • No starter is required for this recipe—the dough is leavened with active dry yeast.
